Planning a functional outdoor kitchen can seem overwhelming but here are some tips to help get you started.

How often will you cook outside?

Think about how often you plan on using your outdoor kitchen. This basic concept will help you determine what features may be necessary for you to keep from running into the house and back. Chances are, if you are planning an outdoor kitchen to begin with, you likely will be using your outdoor kitchen a great deal, so don’t skimp on the details.

What grill options do you prefer?

Some folks already have a preferred method of grilling, be it gas, propane, or charcoal. Maybe you even want a smoker included in your outdoor kitchen. Sometimes, people prefer a combination of grills so that they have options for infusing certain flavors when cooking. Is child safety a concern?

If you have children, or you plan on entertaining folks who do, consider safety features to ensure no one gets hurt. Are burners, switches, and plugs out of reach or appropriately covered? If you plan to incorporate a storage area for dishes and knives, be sure you keep these out of reach of small children or have locks installed on drawers and doors.

How much storage do you need?

Speaking of cabinets and drawers, how much storage would you like to have in your outdoor kitchen? This may depend on how much entertaining you plan to do, or how accessible your indoor kitchen may be for you. Sometimes, folks simply do not want to trek back and forth for prepping or hauling utensils, serving trays, and such. If this sounds inconvenient to you, consider planning on adequate storage space.

How will you use the area?

Think about how you plan on using the area. Will you be entertaining large groups, and eating outside? If so, be sure to include enough space for seating, or even a built-in eating area if you desire. You may even want to add other features such as a water fountain, fish pond, or fire pit.
