Storing your Grill During the Winter

Winter is for grilling too, but if you just aren’t up for being out during the frigid cold temperatures, here are some tips for storing your barbecue grill for the winter. Don’t get too sad about it, this is Tennessee, it will be warm again in no time!

Clean the grill

Be sure that you thoroughly clean your grill to remove any residue on the grilling rack itself. Start by heating the grill up to allow for any food to burn off the rack. This process takes some time, up to 20-30 minutes, but you can stay toasty warm while you relax next to your outdoor fire pit (that Promier Outdoor Products designed and installed for you, of course).

Clean the grill grates

Before you proceed to this next step, be sure to allow the grill to cool down. Using a wire brush, scrub the grill grate using a back and forth motion until all debris has been removed. Once the grill has cooled completely, you can use soap and water, or an oven cleaner, to clean those tough spots. Just be sure to give the grill grate a good rinse to remove any soap or chemicals.

Clean inside the grill

Once the grill is completely cool, remove the grate, and the lava rocks or heat deflector. Wipe down the inside of the grill to remove any buildup. You may also want to go ahead and install a new set of lava rocks so that your grill is ready to fire up when spring arrives.

Clean the outside of the grill

Use an old rag and some soapy water to wash the outside of the grill. Ideally, you would want to hose down your grill cover, too. Before sealing the deal, you may want to browse through your owner’s manual for any additional cleaning instructions. Now is also the time to inspect your grill hoses or other attachment to make sure they are all in working order. Before covering or storing your grill, make sure that it is completely dry. If you do not have a grill cover, consider purchasing one from our online store at or store your grill in the garage or an area that stays dry.

Taking care of your grill will prolong its life, and give you years of enjoyment for your grilling pleasures. For information about outdoor kitchen planning, or to schedule a consultation, contact Promier Outdoor Products today by calling (423) 246-7977.
