Tips for Grilling in the Winter

Just because summer is over, doesn’t mean your grill has to be in hibernation for the winter. Here are a few tips to help make grilling in the winter enjoyable, and safe!

Prep ahead of time

It gets dark out quite early these days. If you don’t have the luxury of an outdoor kitchen (we can help with that!) or if it is just too darn cold out, be sure to prep everything inside before heading out to the grill. You can even save time by doing any prep earlier in the week to make weeknight grilling easy for you. Also, make sure you

Stage your grilling area

By this we mean make sure the area is safe by shoveling off any snow or removing ice from the walk way. Also, be sure you have adequate outdoor lighting to see to and from the grill and the house, as well as for cooking on the grill.

Gather accessories for grilling

Before you head out in the cold, gather any necessary grilling accessories ahead of time. This also cuts down on running in and out of the house, letting cold air inside. Get everything you need and take it out with you when you start grilling.

Wear proper attire

On your hands that is! Your nice, warm winter gloves are not suitable for grilling. Be sure that you wear heat resistant gloves at all times while operating the grill. Also, be sure you are not wearing any type of clothing such as a scarf that could hang near open flames and catch fire.

If you’re lookin’, you ain’t cookin’

This saying couldn’t be truer, especially when winter grilling! Resist the temptation to lift the lid of the grill to check the food that is cooking. Use a digital thermometer instead. Some digital thermometers connect wirelessly to an app that you can download for free onto your smart phone. You can set the app to alert you once your food reaches your desired temperature. You could even wait inside, where it’s toasty warm, until your food is ready.

Stay warm!

Keep some hot milk or water on the side burner to make some hot chocolate or apple cider. This will help keep you warm while you wait on your food to cook! If you have an outdoor fire pit, make use of it and fire it up as well. Your family or friends may even want to join you outside.
